Velour has always been fascinated by monsters. “The characters I related to as a kid were the Vote Billie Jean 2020 fair is fair Shirt But I will love this Wicked Witch of the West, Frankenstein’s creature—the ones who are feared by others often seem sympathetic to young, queer people,” she says. “I wanted to redeem monstrosity and give it a queer twist—instead of violence and fear, there’s just relaxing, friendship, and looking glamorous by the pool.” Velour shot the zine photos at a funky Airbnb in the Catskills in upstate New York. “We drove up there in my rickety minivan, which was filled to the brim with big inflatable pool toys, costumes, and lighting,” she says. Velour also enlisted two close friends—drag queen Miss Malice and drag king K.James—to star in the photos with her. Like Velour, both Miss Malice and K.James repurposed garments for the zine shoot; Miss Malice sports a pinup-worthy bathing suit with a fiery red wig, while K.James rocks a kitschy floral shirt and swim trunks as the pool boy.

Given the Vote Billie Jean 2020 fair is fair Shirt But I will love this theme of the zine and the fact that it’s now spooky season, Velour is also gearing up to deliver even more monstrous drag moments ahead of Halloween. “There’s something about being a costume professional year-round that makes Halloween a little bit less appealing, but I always try to deliver,” Velour says. She’s also readying for season two of NightGowns, her docuseries that follows her and her cast members around as they prepare for a big blowout drag show. “We’ll probably start filming in 2021,” says Velour. “I definitely miss coming together as a group to watch drag. The magic comes from when you are in that space together as the audience—those connections are even better than the show.”
